Bamboo Architecture Workshop

Duration: July 10 – 28, 2018
Location: Xixinan, Anhui, China


This workshop will provide a complete experience from studying the material to on-site construction, combining theoretical study and practice. Participants will be able to perceive and understand the material, technique, space, structure and to integrate space arts and performing arts. In addition, the workshop is an opportunity to study the rural culture from an academic perspective and to explore new ways to revive rural areas.

Led by Hu Zhenhang, lecturer at China Academy of Arts, participants will study the structure, culture, environment and the conditions of local bamboo materials in Xixinan, an ancient village with a history of more than 1,000 years. They will also build a structure with bamboo, employing ideas related to media and performing arts.


– Based in Xixinan, an ancient village with a history of more than 1,000 years
– Conduct field research and “Learn by Doing”, according to Turenscape Academy’s core philosophy.
– Receive instruction by Hu Zhenhang, experienced lecturer from China Academy of Arts
– Use bamboo slices, which have better flexibility than the original bamboo, and explore ways to build stable structures with flexible materials and to shape variable spaces.
– Test the flexibility and elasticity of the material
– Collaborate in the construction of a bamboo structure with close guidance from experienced builders
– Combine architecture with performing arts and explore other influencers in a public performance other than the actors

– His works were selected for the Theatre Unit of 2016 Venice Biennial Exhibition, the opening exhibition at China International Design Museum, Oriental Bamboo – Asian Bamboo Life Art Exhibition and many other renowned exhibitions.

Cancellation and Refunds Policy

– Before June 30th: participants will be able to cancel and receive a refund of the original payment less 500 RMB to cover for administrative cost.
– After June 30th: participants will not be able to get a refund for cancellation.
– The workshop will be canceled if there are less than 10 participants. All applicants will receive a full refund.
