Workshop Introduction

A multidisciplinary, international, multicultural and creative community will gather in Xixinan to create ephemeral installations between public art and land art. These installations will be realized on site with recycled natural materials and inspiration from the ancient village’s unique landscape, culture and traditional crafts.

Our community aims to share creative practices in ways that utilize multimedia, test artistic approaches, and embody performative/spontaneous attitudes towards design in the rural context, especially one interacting with sensitive ecologies. Here, we will explore ways to build RESILIENT and INCLUSIVE rural environments based on actual research in the field. In particular, we are interested in responsible and sustainable cultural development for the local community. To this end, we will directly involve local stakeholders, public institutions, and the community itself to work with us. Despite the ephemeral nature of our creative gathering, we hope any impact we make in relation to community integration, cultural development, and economic vitalization can positively shape life in the village for a long time to come.

This workshop is an excellent opportunity for students looking to learn outside the conventional classroom. You will get the chance to actually interact with the people you will be designing for, an experience that will be enriching for all participants.

Nightly International Landscape Architecture Seminars and Open Lectures (ILARKS) will open the floor to creative, critical, and constructive debate about contemporary urbanism issues. Above all, the unique setting will allow you to experience life in a heritage village over 1000 years old, explore classic Chinese Hui architecture, and discover the rich history behind Chinese ink paintings.

Workshop Site

Thousand-year-old village Xixinan

Xixinan, the “village south of the western brook,” has 1,200 years of history and was once known as a hub for great artists, poets, and calligraphers. Ancient Xixinan was famed for its exquisite scenery and rich culture. The village’s location next to the fertile Feng Le River has further cultivated the villagers’ unique relationship with nature, the legacy of which can still be appreciated today.
